Power vs. Force: How Energy Heals and Transforms Your Life

There are two currents running through every human life. One depletes you, drains the room, and eventually collapses under its own weight. The other renews you, lifts everything around it, and grows stronger the more it’s used.

One is force. The other is power.

In my new video, I go deeper into this distinction and why understanding it may be the single most useful shift you can make in how you think, heal, and lead your life. Watch the video here → STOP FORCING, START FLOWING.

If you’ve ever felt like you were pushing a boulder uphill in your career, your relationships, or your own healing — this is for you.

Why “Power vs. Force” Matters More Than Willpower Ever Will

Most of us were taught that change requires force: grit your teeth, push harder, white-knuckle your way through willpower. It’s the model behind most diets, most New Year’s resolutions, and most addiction recovery programs that don’t actually last.

The problem is that force is a closed system. It requires constant input of effort to sustain itself, it provokes resistance (in others and in yourself), and the moment you stop pushing, it collapses. Force can move you, but it cannot transform you.

Power works differently. Power is aligned rather than pushed. It doesn’t need to overcome resistance because it isn’t fighting anything — it’s an open system that draws energy toward it rather than expending energy against something. This is the energetic principle underneath everything I teach through the Energetics Scale of Consciousness: where you sit on that scale in any given moment determines whether your life is being driven by force or carried by power.

The Energetics of Healing

This distinction isn’t abstract. It shows up in the body, in the nervous system, and in the patterns that keep people stuck in anxiety, depression, burnout, and addiction.

When we operate from force — fear, shame, control, willpower, suppression — we are running on borrowed energy. It’s the nervous system in survival mode, and survival mode was never built to run a whole life. This is why so many people white-knuckle their way through recovery or self-improvement and burn out, relapse, or quietly give up. It isn’t a failure of discipline. It’s a mismatch of energetic strategy.

Real healing happens when we move from managing our symptoms with force to transforming the underlying pattern with power. This is the whole premise behind the Paradigm Process — it isn’t a coping mechanism, it’s an energetic transformation. You’re not learning to tolerate your ego-insurgents, the ten personality patterns that hijack your peace; you’re learning to disarm them at the root. You can read more about how those patterns operate in The Ego Insurgents.

How to Recognize Force in Your Own Life

Force tends to disguise itself as productivity, control, or “just being strong.” A few signs you’re operating from force rather than power:

  • You feel like you have to hold everything together, and rest feels dangerous rather than restorative
  • Your motivation is fear-based (“I have to” rather than “I get to”)
  • Progress feels like a battle you’re barely winning
  • Relationships around you feel like they need managing rather than connecting
  • You experience frequent burnout, followed by guilt for needing to slow down

If several of these are true, it’s not a character flaw — it’s a signal that your system has been running on force for too long, and it’s asking for a different source of energy.

How to Shift From Force Into Power

This shift is the foundation of Contemplative Intelligence — the practice of becoming aware of which energy is driving your thoughts, choices, and body in any given moment, and consciously choosing the one that actually sustains you.

A few starting points I walk through in more depth in the video:

  1. Notice before you fix. Awareness is the first act of power. You cannot shift an energy you haven’t named.
  2. Practice Loving Inquiry instead of self-criticism. Interrogating yourself with compassion — rather than force — is how new neural pathways actually form. More on that here: Loving Inquiry.
  3. Let go of what you’re controlling. Control is force wearing a productive-looking mask. Surrender, in the truest sense, is not passivity — it’s alignment.
  4. Regulate the body before you try to change the mind. Power lives in a nervous system that feels safe. You can explore this more through our CQ Healing Meditations.
  5. Measure your progress on the Energetics Scale, not against a finish line. Healing isn’t linear, but it is measurable — take the Energetics Scale (ESC) Online Assessment to find out where you’re operating from right now.

This framework builds on decades of consciousness research — including the pioneering work of Dr. David R. Hawkins, whose book Power vs. Force first mapped how different states of consciousness carry measurably different energetic weight. I’ve built on that foundation with my own clinical and contemplative work over the past two decades through the Center for Healing and Life Transformation in Knysna, South Africa, working directly with people recovering from addiction, burnout, and trauma.
