This map outlines the journey from a state of contraction to a state of expansion. Each pathway involves releasing a specific “shadow archetype” and, in doing so, recovering a vital aspect of your true self. The Problem of Personality, meaning persona or mask, is that it becomes protective, defensive and then ultimately smothering, which is where much of our depression and anxiety stem from. The Problem of Personality is at some point we need to let go of the old one and create a new one that does not stem from childhood alone.
The Paradigm Process, developed by author, mental health researcher and Life Strategist Mark L. Lockwood, is a therapeutic and personal growth system designed to facilitate profound life transformation. Its core principle is that our “personality creates our personal reality.” This means that by fundamentally shifting our internal programming — our ingrained thoughts, feelings, and beliefs — we can change our external life experiences.
Lockwood, who holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology and is the clinical director at the Center for Healing and Life Transformation, posits that many people become “stuck” in a personality that was formed as a defense mechanism during childhood and early life. He terms these limiting aspects of the ego “insurgents.” These are characters we adopt to navigate a challenging world, such as The Controller, The Perfectionist, The Victim, and The Judge. While once protective, these patterns become prisons that prevent personal growth, joy, and the realization of our true potential.
The Map of Transformation: The Scale of Personality Paradigms
The process of solving The Problem of Personality is structured as a 10-step program — referred to as the “10 Pathways back to sacred self.” This journey involves two key actions on each pathway:
- Letting Go: Consciously identifying and releasing one of the ten “insurgent” personality traits that are holding you back.
- Recovering a Sense Of: Actively cultivating the opposing positive, authentic trait, such as self-love, gratitude, resilience, or wisdom.
Pathway #1: From Control to Love
- Letting go of: The Controller
- This archetype operates from a deep-seated fear of uncertainty and chaos. It believes its worth and safety depend on managing outcomes, people, and environments.
- Associated Feelings: Anxiety, stress, frustration, rigidity, fear of failure, impatience, distrust (in self and others).
- Recovering a sense of: Self-Love
- This is the realization that your worth is inherent and not dependent on external results. It is the practice of offering yourself compassion, acceptance, and care, regardless of circumstance.
- Associated Feelings: Inner peace, acceptance, self-compassion, worthiness, safety, warmth.
Pathway #2: From Perfectionism to Gratitude
- Letting go of: The Perfectionist
- This archetype exacerbates The Problem of Personality and is driven by the belief that love and acceptance are conditional upon flawless performance. It relentlessly focuses on what is wrong, lacking, or could be better.
- Associated Feelings: Chronic disappointment, harsh self-criticism, fear of judgment, never feeling “good enough,” procrastination (due to fear of imperfection).
- Recovering a sense of: Gratitude
- This is the conscious shift in focus from what’s missing to what’s present. It’s an appreciation for the “good enough” and finding joy in the journey, not just the flawless destination.
- Associated Feelings: Contentment, appreciation, joy, peace, wonder, satisfaction.

Pathway #3: From Neurosis to Surrender
- Letting go of: The Neurotic
- This archetype is trapped in a mental loop of worry, overthinking, and worst-case scenarios. It constantly scans for threats and lives in a state of high alert.
- Associated Feelings: Overwhelm, mental exhaustion, persistent worry, obsessive thinking, analysis paralysis, catastrophizing as The Problem of Personality here.
- Recovering a sense of: Surrender
- This is not giving up, but giving in to the flow of life. It’s the profound trust that you can handle what comes your way and the release of the need to mentally solve every potential problem before it happens.
- Associated Feelings: Calm, trust, relief, faith, flow, release.
Pathway #4: From Codependence to Connection
- Letting go of: The Codependent
- This archetype sources its identity and self-worth from others. It often sacrifices its own needs, desires, and boundaries in an attempt to please, fix, or gain approval from someone else.
- Associated Feelings: Emptiness, resentment, fear of abandonment, loss of self, enmeshment, anxiety about others’ opinions.
- Recovering a sense of: Connection
- This is the ability to form healthy, interdependent relationships based on mutual respect, authenticity, and clear boundaries. It is a connection that nourishes rather than drains.
- Associated Feelings: Authenticity, mutual respect, fulfillment, security in relationships, belonging, interdependence.
Pathway #5: From Eccentricity to Certainty
- Letting go of: The Eccentric (in the sense of the Outsider/Misfit)
- This archetype often feels fundamentally different or disconnected, using uniqueness as a defense mechanism to avoid vulnerability or rejection. It can be a self-imposed isolation born from a fear of not belonging.
- Associated Feelings: Alienation, loneliness, misunderstanding, insecurity, defensiveness, feeling like an imposter.
- Recovering a sense of: Certainty
- This refers to inner certainty. It’s a deep, unshakable knowledge of your own values, truth, and worth. You no longer need external validation to feel secure in who you are.
- Associated Feelings: Self-assurance, confidence, inner stability, conviction, groundedness.

- This archetype believes that life happens to them – not for them. It perceives itself as powerless against external forces and circumstances, often leading to blame and a sense of helplessness.
- Associated Feelings: Powerlessness, helplessness, resentment, self-pity, blame, hopelessness.
- Recovering a sense of: Resilience
- This is the recognition that while you cannot always control events, you can control your response. It is the inner strength to bounce back from adversity, learn from challenges, and reclaim your personal power.
- Associated Feelings: Empowerment, strength, capability, hope, adaptability, determination.

Pathway #7: From Performance to Presence
- Letting go of: The Actor
- This archetype wears a mask, performing a version of themselves they believe will be most acceptable to the world. The true self is hidden for fear it will be rejected.
- Associated Feelings: Inauthenticity, emptiness, exhaustion from performing, fear of being “found out,” disconnection from self.
- Recovering a sense of: Presence
- This is the state of being fully engaged in the present moment, without a mask. It is an authentic embodiment of who you are, right here, right now. Your actions align with your inner state.
- Associated Feelings: Authenticity, mindfulness, engagement, vitality, groundedness, being genuine.
Pathway #8: From Pleasing to Self-Regulation
- Letting go of: The Pleaser
- This archetype constantly seeks external validation by accommodating others, often at their own expense. Their emotional state is highly dependent on the approval and happiness of those around them.
- Associated Feelings: Fear of conflict, guilt, anxiety about disappointing others, lack of personal boundaries, feeling drained.
- Recovering a sense of: Self & Regulation
- This is a two-fold recovery. First, you recover your Sense of Self — your own needs, opinions, and desires. Second, you develop Self-Regulation — the ability to manage your own emotional state from within, without needing external approval to feel okay.
- Associated Feelings: Self-respect, emotional stability, empowerment, inner calm, healthy boundaries.
Pathway #9: From Judgment to Wisdom
- Letting go of: The Judge
- This archetype (often aimed at self or others) sees the world in rigid, black-and-white terms of right and wrong. It is quick to condemn and slow to understand, driven by fear and rigid beliefs.
- Associated Feelings: Criticalness, righteousness, harshness, intolerance, guilt, shame, separation.
- Recovering a sense of: Wisdom
- Wisdom is the ability to see with compassion, nuance, and understanding. It looks for the lesson instead of the fault and approaches situations with an open heart and a desire for integration, not condemnation.
- Associated Feelings: Compassion, understanding, empathy, perspective, discernment, acceptance.
Pathway #10: From Anxiety to Courage
- Letting go of: The Anxious
- The Problem of Personality with this archetype lives in a future that is filled with threat and negative possibilities. It is a state of being constantly on guard against what might go wrong, stealing peace from the present.
- Associated Feelings: Dread, fear, nervousness, physical tension (racing heart, tight chest), worry, sense of impending doom.
- Recovering a sense of: Courage
- Courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to act in spite of it. It is the choice to face uncertainty and challenge with the belief that you are capable of handling the outcome. It is trusting your ability to meet the future.
- Associated Feelings: Bravery, capability, confidence, boldness, willingness, empowerment.
