Beyond the Great Divide: How Christian Mysticism and Non-Duality Restore Our Connection to God

By Mark L. Lockwood

In a world fractured by over 30,000 different Christian denominations and endless religious gatekeeping, a vital question is emerging: Is it possible to know God without the politics of religion?

The answer lies in a path that has been hidden in plain sight for centuries: the Mystical Contemplative Tradition. By moving away from the “sharp intellect” that seeks to divide and toward a state of Non-Duality, we can finally experience the God for all people.

Mark L. Lockwood’s “Beyond the Great Divide” series explores the intersection of Christian Mysticism and Non-Duality, advocating for a deeper, unified understanding of God beyond sectarian divisions. He encourages individuals to embrace contemplative practices that foster connection and authenticity amidst a fragmented spiritual landscape, emphasizing love and kindness over dogma.

If you have ever felt like a stranger in your own faith, or if the walls of religious dogma have begun to feel more like a prison than a sanctuary, you are not alone. Many of us are weary of the arguments, the divisions, and the ‘us versus them’ narratives that have defined our spiritual lives for too long. But beneath the noise of doctrine lies a quiet, ancient path—a mystical tradition that doesn’t ask you to believe more, but invites you to be more.

This is an invitation to move beyond the sharp edges of the intellect and into the warm, unitive embrace of a God who has never known how to be separate from you. It is a journey home to the heart of reality, where love is the only language spoken and every soul is already welcome.

The Problem with Religious Division

History is a witness to the damage caused by dualistic thinking. From the Protestant-Catholic conflicts to the modern “us vs. them” narratives found in many “New Age” and traditional circles, the human ego has used theology as a weapon.

As I discuss in my latest video on Christian Mysticism, the intellect is a sharp tool. When it is not grounded in Contemplative Intelligence, it cuts reality into pieces, forcing us to choose sides: Protestant or Catholic, believer or non-believer, right or wrong. But God is found in the “and,” not just the “either/or.”

What is Christian Non-Duality?

Non-duality (or non-dualism) is the ability to hold seemingly opposite truths together without the need to judge or eliminate one of them. It is what many modern thinkers, from Dr. Jordan Peterson to Richard Rohr, describe as the transition from a binary mind to a unitive mind.

When we look through the lens of non-duality as we start exploring Christian Mysticism and Non-Duality, we stop seeing “enemies” and start seeing a shared human journey. We begin to understand the Perennial Wisdom—the idea that there is a universal truth at the heart of all great spiritual traditions.

4 Steps to “Be Still and Know”

To move from religious theory to mystical experience, we must apply the principles of the Paradigm Process:

  1. Observe the Ego: Recognize the part of you that wants to be “right” and send others to “hell.”
  2. Practice Stillness: True knowledge of God happens when the thinking mind stops. This is the heart of contemplative prayer.
  3. Transcend and Include: Don’t throw away your tradition. Instead, go through it and beyond it.
  4. Engage Your Contemplative Intelligence: Use your higher awareness to see reality exactly as it is, without the distortion of your personality or shadow self.

The Sacred Anchor in a Digital Age

In 2026, we are surrounded by AI and digital noise, yet the human soul is hungrier than ever for authenticity. By rediscovering the Desert Fathers and the mystical heart of Christianity, we find a “Sacred Anchor” that technology cannot replicate.

God is not a concept to be debated; God is an experience to be had. As we deconstruct the walls of division, we find that what we were seeking was seeking us all along.

A Grace-Filled Landing

As you step away from this screen and back into the rhythm of your life, remember that the transformation you seek is not a destination to be reached, but a presence to be realized. You don’t need to ‘hit the mark’ perfectly to be worthy of the Divine; you simply need to be still enough to notice that the mark was never moving.

Be patient with yourself as you learn about Christian Mysticism and Non-Duality and as you dissolve the old judgments and integrate the light of your true, non-dual nature. The path of the mystic is paved with kindness—starting with the kindness you show to your own soul. You are a part of a beautiful, universal story that is still being written. Be still, be kind, and know that you are loved beyond measure. Namaste.
