Metta Guided Healing Meditation

Metta Meditation, also known as “Loving-Kindness” meditation, is a 2,700-year-old Buddhist practice that involves cultivating loving-kindness towards oneself and others. By directing loving thoughts and feelings inward, we can access the heart’s powerful healing potential, transcending limiting personality traits and emotional patterns.

This practice is particularly effective in addressing mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and burnout. It can even help individuals with more severe conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder and addictions. For many, Metta Meditation offers a transformative experience, enabling them to break free from self-imposed limitations and embrace a more compassionate and authentic self.

By starting with self-love, we can gradually expand our circle of compassion to encompass our loved ones, community, and ultimately the entire world. This outward radiation of loving-kindness can have a profound impact on our relationships, our mental well-being, and our overall sense of peace.

At our burnout center and depression clinic in South Africa, we utilize Metta Meditation to help individuals dismantle ego defences and peel away the masks that hinder genuine connection with others. By accessing the space beneath these superficial layers, we can cultivate a deeper sense of empathy, understanding, and compassion.

How to Practice Metta Meditation

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a peaceful and quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.
  2. Adopt a Comfortable Posture: Sit in a comfortable meditation posture, such as sitting cross-legged or in a chair with your back straight.
  3. Focus on Your Breath: Begin by focusing on your breath, bringing your attention to the sensation of the breath entering and leaving your body.
  4. Cultivate Loving-Kindness: Once you’ve settled into a state of calm, start directing loving-kindness towards yourself. You can use simple phrases like “May I be happy,” “May I be peaceful,” or “May I be safe.”
  5. Expand Your Focus: Gradually expand your focus to include loved ones, friends, acquaintances, and eventually all beings.
  6. Conclude the Practice: When you’re ready to conclude the practice, take a few moments to reflect on the feelings of peace and goodwill that you’ve cultivated.

Remember, the key to Metta meditation is consistency and patience. Regular practice can lead to significant benefits for your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The Meta Meditation for Mindful Mental Health

Our Metta Guided Healing Meditation is designed to liberate our body, heart, and mind from anger, resentment, frustration, and all acts of unkindness. Although we, as human beings, have the propensity to be impulsive and reactive, we can manage ourselves through the art of self-regulation. We can choose to be kind, loving, and compassionate with ourselves, with others, and with the universe.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. – Jesus Christ in the book of John

Love is the theme of the universe, the most powerful force there is. Our meta meditation will bring harmony, peace, and that love to our being and to all other beings. Today, we create loving kindness; we radiate it. Afterwards, we open our hearts and our emotional intelligence, releasing powerful healing resources for ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our meditation will unmask the defensive personality. We’re going to breathe, relax, and just listen to the meditation. Just be here.

We will slowly direct our thoughts, feelings, and affirmations towards ourselves, opening the heart and decreasing the volume of our defenses. When we manifest enough loving energy and kindness to radiate outwards, we do so into our room, our neighbourhood, our cities, continents, through the oceans, and through the universe. Let’s breathe. Totally relax. Let’s feel the energy in our hands, our feet, the front of our head. Let’s breathe another deep breath and relax.

May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I be free from all suffering. May I live with ease and peace. May I lead with compassion. May I prosper with wisdom. May I walk confidently in my values. May I find forgiveness.

As we relax and breathe, let’s start to send some of this love, some of this energy that we have in our hearts, the luminescent, powerful green energy of love that is swirling around us, and let’s send it out into the room around us. Let’s emanate that green energy of love into the space around us. Use your imagination and slowly imagine love flowing into the room—love and kindness pouring from your heart directly into the space.

Let’s affirm: May I move into love.

There are so many living things around us, living beings that we cannot see, energy that we cannot feel or see with the five senses. Let all of it be embraced by love. Let your love and kindness, the kindness that comes from your heart, reach out beyond your room and into your neighborhood. All we need to do is see it, feel it, and believe it.

Immediately, we are letting go of anger, unkindness, and resentment, dissipating jealousy, disease, and disorder.

May all living things be happy. May all living things be healthy. See the green energy around your neighborhood. May all living beings be safe. May all living beings be free from suffering. May all living beings live with ease and in peace. May all living beings lead with compassion. May all living beings prosper with wisdom. May all living beings walk confidently in their values. May all living beings find forgiveness.

May I find forgiveness. May I walk confidently in my values. May I prosper with wisdom and compassion and peace. May I be free from suffering. May I be safe, happy, and healthy.

Start to see the boundless universe inside you with your imagination and intuition. Start to see green, loving energy surrounding the world. Everything is energy. Start to see universal loving kindness surrounding the Earth. This is your intention; this is God’s intention—One song of Love, one Universe.

We let go of the unkind and the egoic, the selfish, the jealous, the false pride. Our intention is to see every living thing be peaceful and at ease. Our intention is to see everyone and everything, every living being that surrounds us, feel peace in their environment, in their way of being, in their consciousness.

May everybody be attentive and gentle to their own discomfort and suffering. May everyone be grateful for their own joy and well-being. May they be happy, safe, and peaceful. May they be free from emotional suffering and live in peace.

Stay connected to the love overflowing from your body, heart, and mind. Let it flow out into the entire universe, surrounding it with love. Our planet is so special and unique, so beautiful, created just for the purpose of conscious love.

Love is the water of life. Let’s drink it down and let it guide us. Let love be our guide today, here and now. Love is the universe in motion. It is so powerful; it’s the fire that drives us and keeps us going, as powerful as the sun, warming the entire galaxy.

When we’re conscious, we’re all able to feel love—passionate, loving energy that encircles us. It’s what we have in common. Love that overflows is beyond understanding.

No longer do we see the world through a mask of bitterness and anger, jealousy, and false pride. We release it to love. We release ourselves to self-love.

May everyone and everything be gentle towards their own discomfort and suffering. May the world light up with love, kindness, graciousness, and generosity. May everyone be well, attentive, and grateful for their own joy and well-being. May the world be happy. May the cosmos be safe. May everything and every living being be peaceful.

Fear is a state created that does not exist, so we let it go. We know deeply that love never ends. Love endures forever; it will never pass away, never cease, never fail. Love doesn’t judge your anger; love trusts and hopes as we do now. Love perseveres as we do now, as our neighborhood does, as the world does, as the cosmos does, as every living creature does.

Love endures forever.

Breathe, relax, just be.

May I let go of my need to control. May I let go of my perfectionism. May I let go of my neuroticism. May I let go of my co-dependence. May I let go of my masks, the eccentric, the victim, the actor, and the many roles that I play.

May I let go of the pleaser, the judge. May I let go of my anxiety. May I lead with compassion, prosper with wisdom, be confident in my values, and find forgiveness. May I start to experience a sense of self-love. May I recover a sense of gratitude, a sense of peaceful surrender.

May I now accept and recover a sense of connection to myself, to God, and to all other living beings right now, here. May I recover a sense of certainty, resilience, and presence. May I recover a sense of self-love, self-regulation, and wisdom. May I recover a deep sense of courage.

Let’s radiate our love to the entire world. May all living beings practice self-love. May they be happy, healthy, and safe. May all living beings remember their values of gratitude and be free from suffering. May all living beings live in ease and peace with a good sense of connection, certainty, and resilience. May all living beings, big and small, seen and unseen, live with a sense of ease and peace.

May we all find deep resilience, presence, and self-regulation. May we all walk confidently in our values. May all living beings act with wisdom, and may we always let courage lead. May all living beings find forgiveness, hope, and love. May all living beings find faith, hope, and love.
