The Salt and the Lake

Before we scale the heights of our consciousness through The 5 Stages of Becoming Yourself, I want to share a Zen story often told by masters who understand the weight of a heavy heart.

An aging master grew tired of his apprentice’s constant complaints about the bitterness of life. One morning, he sent the apprentice to fetch a handful of salt. When the boy returned, the master told him to mix the salt into a small glass of water and drink it.

“How does it taste?” the master asked.

“Bitter,” the apprentice replied, spitting it out.

The master then led the boy to the edge of a vast, pristine lake and told him to throw a handful of salt into its waters. “Now,” the master said, “drink from the lake. How does it taste?”

“Fresh,” the apprentice said.

The master looked at the boy and whispered: “The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. But the amount of bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is enlarge your sense of things. Stop being a glass. Become a lake”.
